national qualifications framework (NQF)

an instrument for the classification of qualifications, according to a set of criteria covering specified levels of achieved learning, which aims to integrate national qualifications sub-systems and to improve transparency, access, progression and the quality of qualifications

national qualifications system

all aspects of activity related to the recognition of learning, and other mechanisms that link education and training to the labour market and to civil society including the development and implementation of institutional arrangements and processes relating to quality assurance, and the assessment and award of qualifications; a national qualifications system may comprise several sub-systems some or all of which might be referenced in a national qualifications framework

non-formal and informal learning (NFIL)

non-formal learning is not provided by an education or training institution and typically does not lead to certification; however, non-formal learning is intentional on the part of the learner and has structured objectives, learning time and learner support; informal learning results from daily activities related to work, family life or leisure, it is not structured and most often does not lead to certification; in most cases, informal learning is unintentional on the part of the learner
